This rapid change is accompanied and driven by an enormous diversification of journalism &#8211; professional vs. citizen journalism, data driven journalism, the flood of visual material, etc. These changes raise questions of quality assurance, of orientation in this vast landscape, and, for cultural heritage institutions, of selection criteria and methods for preservation and access. The conference will reflect how libraries are and should be deeply involved in these efforts and how they try to manage new media diversity in the light of their archiving and access roles.<\/p>\n<p>Libraries themselves are also agents of media transformation by digitizing their historical holdings of, among others, newspapers and journals as cultural heritage. What is the state of affairs worldwide, and how do individual projects advance best practices? What next &#8211; how can libraries cooperatively support preparation of the digital raw-material for historical research, text and data mining, other digital humanities or educational purposes? How can libraries and cultural heritage institutions communicate the educational outreach? The conference should reflect expectations and present best-practice solutions.<\/p>\n<h4>The main theme of the Conference<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>Reviving the past and keeping up with the future \u2013 the libraries\u2019 role in preserving and providing access to newspapers and news media<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>has the following <strong>sub-themes<\/strong> \u2013 and papers chosen for presentation should address, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"green\">\n<li>Reporting the news in the digital and social media age: facts, trends, new types of journalism<\/li>\n<li>Newspaper and digital news media archiving, preservation and access<\/li>\n<li>E-legal deposit, agreements between libraries and publishers, webharvesting<\/li>\n<li>Retrodigitization of historical newspapers<\/li>\n<li>Services built on digital news(paper) collections, data curation<\/li>\n<li>Historical Research, text and data mining, and other digital humanities projects being done on the basis of digital news(paper) collections<\/li>\n<li>Users\u2019 experiences with digital newspaper collections &#8211; usability expectations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other proposals relevant to the main conference theme will also be considered.<\/p>\n<h4>Submission Guidelines<\/h4>\n<ul id=\"green\">\n<li>Proposal abstracts should be submitted as an MS Word file<\/li>\n<li>Proposal abstracts must be submitted by <strong>10 December 2015<\/strong>, must be in English and should clearly include:<\/li>\n<ul id=\"green\">\n<li>Title of proposed presentation<\/li>\n<li>Abstract of proposed paper (no more than 300 words)<\/li>\n<li>Name(s) of presenter(s) plus position and\/or title<\/li>\n<li>Employer \/ affiliated institution<\/li>\n<li>Contact information including e-mail address, telephone number<\/li>\n<li>Short biographical statement of presenter(s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Proposal abstracts should be submitted to (yes to all 5!):<\/h4>\n<ul id=\"green\">\n<li>Niels B\u00f8nding (E-mail: nieb@statsbiblioteket.dk)<\/li>\n<li>Mary Feeney (E-mail: mfeeney@email.arizona.edu)<\/li>\n<li>Ulrich Hagenah (E-mail: hagenah@sub.uni-hamburg.de)<\/li>\n<li>Yves Maurer (E-mail: yves.maurer@bnl.etat.lu)<\/li>\n<li>Susann Solberg (E-mail: s.solberg@dnb.de)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:nieb@statsbiblioteket.dk,%20mfeeney@email.arizona.edu,%20hagenah@sub.uni-hamburg.de,%20yves.maurer@bnl.etat.lu,%20s.solberg@dnb.de?subject=IFLA%20News%20Media%20Conference%202016%20-%20Proposal%20Abstract\">Submit your proposal to all 5.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Selected presenters will be notified by <strong>10 January 2016<\/strong>. April 2016<\/h4>\n<p><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sub.uni-hamburg.de\/\">Staats- und Universit\u00e4tsbibliothek Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifla.org\/news-media\">IFLA News Media Section<\/a><\/strong> (The <strong>I<\/strong>nternational <strong>F<\/strong>ederation of <strong>L<\/strong>ibrary <strong>A<\/strong>ssociations and Institutions)<\/p>\n<p>Die Landschaft gegenw\u00e4rtiger Nachrichtenmedien wird immer vielf\u00e4ltiger, von gedruckten Zeitungen, E-Paper und Rundfunknachrichten bis hin zu Social Media, Nachrichtenportalen und neuen Genres, deren Entwicklung von Tag zu Tag fortschreitet. Dieser rasante Wandel wird begleitet von einer enormen Diversifikation des Journalismus \u2013 Stichworte sind dabei u.a.: professioneller vs. partizipativer oder B\u00fcrger-Journalismus, Data Driven Journalism, die Flut visueller Inhalte, etc. Diese Ver\u00e4nderungen rufen Fragen hervor hinsichtlich Qualit\u00e4tsstandards, Nachhaltigkeit, grunds\u00e4tzlich nach Orientierungshilfen in der Un\u00fcbersichtlichkeit und, speziell f\u00fcr Ged\u00e4chtnisinstitutionen, die Frage nach Auswahlkriterien und \u2013verfahren f\u00fcr die Erhaltung und Zug\u00e4nglichmachung dieser Inhalte. Die Tagung wird reflektieren, wie tief Bibliotheken in diese Anstrengungen involviert sind bzw. sein sollten, und wie sie vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Archivierungs- und Vermittlungsrolle mit der neuen Medienvielfalt umgehen.<\/p>\n<p>Bibliotheken sind auch selbst Akteure und Gestalter des Medienwandels, indem sie ihre historischen Best\u00e4nde von (u.a.) Zeitungen und Zeitschriften als kulturelles Erbe digitalisieren. Wie ist der Stand der Dinge auf diesem Gebiet weltweit? Welche best-practice-Erfahrungen k\u00f6nnen einzelne Projekte vermitteln? Und was kommt danach \u2013 wie k\u00f6nnen Bibliotheken kooperativ die Aufbereitung des digitalen Rohmaterials f\u00fcr die historische Forschung, Text-and-Data-Mining, andere Anforderungen der Digital Humanities oder zu Bildungszwecken unterst\u00fctzen? Wie k\u00f6nnen Bibliotheken und andere Ged\u00e4chtnisinstitutionen solche Aktivit\u00e4ten zur didaktischen medialen Aufbereitung und Nutzbarmachung ihres digitalen Materials f\u00fcr verschiedenste Zwecke organisieren und kommunizieren? Die Tagung soll auf einen Dialog zwischen Erwartungen und schon gefundenen L\u00f6sungen hinf\u00fchren.<\/p>\n<h4>Das Hauptthema der Konferenz<\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>Reviving the past and keeping up with the future \u2013 the libraries\u2019 role in preserving and providing access to newspapers and news media<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>hat die folgende <strong>Unterthemen<\/strong> \u2013 und eingereichte Vortr\u00e4ge sollten einen dieser Aspekte ansprechen, k\u00f6nnen jedoch thematisch dar\u00fcber hinausgehen: <\/p>\n<ul id=\"green\">\n<li>Das Nachrichtengesch\u00e4ft im Zeitalter digitaler und sozialer Medien: Fakten, Trends, neue Spielarten des Journalismus<\/li>\n<li>Sammlung, Langzeitarchivierung und Zug\u00e4nglichmachung von Zeitungen und digitalen Nachrichtenmedien durch Bibliotheken<\/li>\n<li>Elektronisches Pflichtexemplar, Vereinbarungen zwischen Verleger(verb\u00e4nde)n und Bibliotheken, Websitearchivierung<\/li>\n<li>Retrodigitalisierung von Zeitungen<\/li>\n<li>Bibliotheksservices und -angebote, die auf digitalisierten Zeitungsbest\u00e4nden aufsetzen; Data Curation f\u00fcr digitale und digitalisierte Nachrichtenmedien<\/li>\n<li>Historische Forschungen, Text-and-Data-Mining- oder andere Projekte der Digital Humanities, die auf der Basis digitalisierter Zeitungsbest\u00e4nde bearbeitet werden\/wurden<\/li>\n<li>Nutzungserfahrungen mit digitalen Zeitungssammlungen \u2013 Erwartungen an Portale f\u00fcr Zeitungen und andere Nachrichtenmedien<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Weitere Vorschl\u00e4ge, die Bezug zum Hauptthema der Konferenz haben, k\u00f6nnen ebenfalls in Betracht gezogen werden.<\/p>\n<p>Die Tagung findet in englischer Sprache statt.<\/p>\n<h4>Einreichung eines Abstracts<\/h4>\n<ul id=\"green\">\n<li>Abstracts sind als MS Word-Datei einzureichen.<\/li>\n<li>Abstracts sind in englischer Sprache bis <strong>10.
